Hiking up a mountain with a heavy pack on your back may not sound like the greatest thing in the world, but some people truly love it. It's their ideal outdoor sport. They dream of hiking the world's greatest peaks like Mount Kilimanjaro or Everest.

As soon as the snow begins to melt they start planning their trip up the closest mountain to their home. Of course, a person can't just head out the door and up the mountain. He has to prepare for his trip if he wants it to be both safe and enjoyable.

He will first need to prepare his body, especially if he's not a very active type person. He needs a good mix of cardio and endurance activity. The cardio to make him able to hike miles a day without getting too tired, and the endurance to make sure his muscles will be able to carry him and his pack up the mountain.

Some people actually hike or run daily to build up their bodies. The activity required will vary depending on the mountain they want to climb. If it is a strenuous mountain, such as Everest, it will take more preparation, and possibly even physical workouts with a trainer or other such expert.

As the time for the hiking excursion draws near, the hiker will want to get his pack ready. The ideal place to start will be in an outdoors sporting goods store. There he can get the advice of the employees if necessary, but more than that, this type of store will have the items that he needs. First off, he will need to find a large backpack, one that will be able to carry his supplies. It, like everything that will go in it, needs to be lightweight.

If it is an overnight excursion he will want to find a good sleeping bag, usually a mummy sack, which is a smaller lightweight sleeping bag, and a compression sack. The sack is designed to make the bag as small as possible. The bag needs to be designed for thirty degrees or colder, depending on the mountain.

The hiker doesn't want to freeze at the top of a mountain. He may also want to buy a lightweight, one man tent so he can be protected from the elements. Of course, food is a necessity as well, as is water. He needs plenty of those and the food needs to be nonperishable items such as protein bars, cans of soup, etc. If he is going alone a miniature portable camp stove might come in handy as well, especially if he has some soup.

These items will cover the needs for his survival. Other items that might also come in handy would be a flashlight, flares in case of an emergency, a first aid kit, a walkie talkie or cell phone, and a Swiss army knife.

Hiking up a mountain may actually be one of the most amazing things a person can do. It's hard work, but once you reach the top the feeling of accomplishment, the wonders of nature, and the incredible scenery all mix together to create an amazing feeling of euphoria.
