Looking for new places to visit? Just 90 miles west of Washington, D.C., is Skyland, Virginia, located in picturesque Shenandoah National Park. Nestled in the breathtaking beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this popular destination offers nature at its finest, definitely a nice get-away from the hustle and bustle of city. At an elevation of 3,576 feet, the surrounding natural beauty is astounding, and attractive to visitors with a variety of interests including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, bird watching, hunting, fishing, and of course, relaxing, and taking in that fresh, crisp, mountain air.

Skyland can be accessed via Skyline Drive, a National Scenic By-Way that runs along the mountain tops and meanders through Shenandoah National Park. For as far as the eye can see, panoramic views of the famous "blue" mountains and the surrounding pristine Shenandoah Valley. The best time to visit the area is anytime from spring through fall, but as frequent guests can attest, the fall foliage is an absolute must-see when traveling through this scenic part of Virginia. By motor car, horseback, or foot, visitors will definitely not be disappointed by the magnificent beauty.

The best way to get up-close and personal with all that natural splendor is via a nice selection of hiking trails that range from easy to strenuous, and can take from a half hour to a whole day, depending on how much time is spent basking in the glorious views. The Limberlost trail is one of the easiest hikes, and also an ADA accessible trail. The 1.3 mile loop is best enjoyed from spring through fall and is pleasurable for visitors of all ages and physical abilities. Another super-easy trail is Millers Head Trail, which offers a beautiful vantage point to take photographs that will surely be constant reminders to return for more.

For a more adventurous hiking challenge, try the Cedar Run - Whiteoak Canyon Loop, a challenging but gorgeous hike featuring numerous flowing waterfalls and stunning lush vegetation. The trail can be somewhat rocky and strenuous at times, but the views are definitely worth it. Probably one of the most notable hikes is on the Appalachian Trail, which offers fantastic views of Stony Man Mountain from Marys Rock, featuring awesome panoramic views year round, but the most colorful scenes are provided during autumn when the turning leaves of oak, maple and other native hardwoods burst with color. The length of this hike is a bit longer, and does require moderate hiking skills, but is assuredly a great way to spend a glorious day in Shenandoah National Park.
