Studying at universities has been a costly affair and due to the increasing cost of almost everything in life including fees, it has become very necessary for students to find ways to reduce their expenditures. Apart from finding part time jobs to augment the finances, there are easy steps for students to curtail their spending, and live more comfortably by spending less money. Some of these steps are discussed below.
First of all, examine and make a list of all your expenses and identify which are necessary and superficial. You will be surprised that many of the things you buy are unnecessary or a cheaper alternative could have been found. Once you have identified the important times, try to abstain yourself from the unnecessary things by gradually phasing them out from your shopping list. Be aware that even a few pounds spend on unnecessary items on a daily or weekly basis can add up to substantial amount within a years time.
Self discipline is the key to put a stop to your over indulgence and also a trait of clever shopping also can help. Sometimes, it is unnecessary to buy a thing such as CD or a book outright as you can borrow one from one your friends or relatives, and you can return these things once you have finished your need. Similarly, you can help your friends with an item they need to borrow, and this will create a net work of friends from whom you can expect similar help in return.
Most students end up spending more than they desire due to absence or planning or organization. Arrange and keep in order what ever you have and shop only for things which are unavoidable. Go to a shop with a carefully prepared shopping list and look around for things by focusing on the list only, avoiding the temptation to reach out for what ever things that catch your fancy. Impulsive buying is the bane of shoppers, depriving them of their hard earned money and emerging as losers at the end of the shopping.
Before you go for shopping, make an estimate of the total cost of the things you are going to buy and take only the necessary money with you; may be some extra cash in case you underestimate. Carrying cash with you is always better while shopping because you know how much money you have with you and that if you pick up any thing extra you wont be able to pay for it. This is much better than using a credit card or debit card while shopping, because in this case the money you have is in plastic and you could be carried away by the shopping environment to buy more because you have sufficient purchase power in the card you are carrying with you.
Also, make sure that you have eaten well before setting out for shopping because a hungry shopper is less focussed and tend to buy things in a hurry. Moreover, you will be tempted to visit a care or restaurant to have some refreshment or have a meal. Eating at a restaurant is comparatively more expensive and unhealthy than eating at home.
