Just about any job has a certain number of safety procedures. But among the most important is the use of equipment to protect the head.
The issue and proper utilization of a hard hat has saved countless lives since the induction of the United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administrations standardization of protective head gear. Even before standardized policy was issued, smart employers have provided and sensible employees have used protective head gear on any job that could involve falling objects or work conditions where an injury to the head could cause serious injury. From Roman Soldiers to modern day underwater treasure hunters, head protection has been a paramount concern.
It is possible that the choice of a hard hat will be made for the wearer by the employer. OSHA regulations have made it mandatory for a certain standard of protection to be met by hard hat manufacturers. Such standards can be researched by looking up the ANSI requirements for hard hats or by visiting the OSHA web site.
When having the option of choosing your own head protection, there are several factors to consider. Modern hard hats come in a myriad of qualities and applications. In order to choose the best head protection, one needs to assess the scope and level of protection it will need to provide. Some basic considerations are level of protection, application, size, style, and cost. Hard hats can range from $10 light duty “bump covers” to several hundreds of dollars for Kevlar Tactical Helmets.
The hardware that suspends the hard composite cover over the head comes in several styles. Chin straps and retaining hardware should also be considered. And as with any other safety gear, there is a broad market for add-on accessories. Visors, ear protection, and lighting are just some of the options that can be added to a hard hat. Various shapes of hard hats are also available. High riding hats are easy to use with bulky ear protection. Full brim hats come with protective extension over the full circle of the hat to protect the ears and back of the neck of the wearer. Once style, fitment, and accessories have been taken into consideration, its’ time to look at what level of protection the hat must fulfill.
ANSI Type I hats are designed to protect against blows from the top of the helmet. ANSI Type II helmets provide some protection from blows to the side of the helmet as well as to the top. Type II “E” helmets are constructed to be resistant to even 20,000 volts of electricity, with a step down in electrical charge protection provided by Type “G” (2200 volts).
Equipment can never be a substitute for common sense or caution. Head injuries can still occur even while wearing a hard hat. The most important fact to realize is that a hard hat is just a protective cover for a device that should be providing the bulk of the Safety Precautions.
