The retail industry saw a revolution in automated data collection and management when the barcode was invented in 1952 by Bernard Silver and Joseph Woodland. Barcode inventory is basically a system that uses a series of parallel lines with varying widths and thicknesses, which each represent the binary numbers 0 and 1. A barcode scanner is used to read the sequence, which starts from 0 to 9, and the sequence is then translated into information including price and product description using a computer.
