One of the greatest inventions to befall our world is the one thing that practically everyone around the globe is using and that is the computer and internet. There was a time when I, like many other people, did not own a computer and those that did were able to afford something hi tech and expensive. The internet was a fascinating new phenomena, connecting people together from all corners of the earth and providing worldly information at the tap of a keyboard.
As a child I would remember both my parents making long distance phone calls and practically shouting down the phone for the other person to hear them. The process was long and arduous, with my parents feeling frustrated that their message was not picked up clearly. Now with the help of my broadband internet connection, one no longer has to damage their vocal chords down their landline telephone and can instead enjoy the perks of using VOIP phones.
Despite the rising popularity of IP telephony there are still many people out there who do not know what VOIP phones are and how they can make long distance calls cheaper. Given that many people now access to broadband internet, installing VOIP phones cannot be simpler. The individual must have a broadband internet connection and have the IP programme installed onto their computer. In order for the calls to be free, the recipient should also have the same programme installed onto their PC and have your profile added into their account.
The VOIP system can be used to call landlines, which generally have a cheaper rate per minute and usually connect to most landline phones quicker than conventional methods. Most IP users tend to have a microphone and speakers attached to their computer when making a call. Headsets are especially useful for people who work in a busy office environment and need to make conference calls. VOIP works by managing analogue voice information and translating it into digital information, which is what turns the computer into a telephone. However, when using a landline for IP communication a separate VoIP box is used to connect with the handset and the computer. This is a simple process and many of these can be purchased online or via the software programme you choose to use.
VoIP phones can be installed by your computer and works like a normal telephone. Like a pay as you go phone, you can buy credits on your IP account and make calls to local numbers. The services provided are often free these include conference calling, call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, group pick up and call transfer. Some programmes may charge for a voicemail service, this depends on whether the calls are made to landline numbers or not. Calling from PC to PC is almost always free, this also includes personal messaging service or chat boxes. Reputable IP services now have a video calling set up which is especially useful for people contacting each other at greater distances.
