Cremation fell out of favor with the Christian population in the early Middle Ages, but was later recommended on grounds of health and sanitation during the reign of Queen Victoria. A milestone was reached in 1963 when the Pope lifted the ban on cremation. In 1966, Catholic priests were allowed to officiate at Cremation ceremonies. Even today, religious practices like Islam, Orthodox Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Parsees and Greek Orthodox Christianity forbid the practice of cremation. It has been the usual method of disposal of the dead among Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Calvinists, Liberal Jews, Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Mormons and Methodists, to name a few.

Funerals are never cheap. A really basic affair will start at 500 pounds but the average funeral will cost 2,000 pounds upwards. This is not something many of us want to consider but if we don't, then who will? The burden of funeral arrangements and costs will fall on the next of kin if we shuffle off this mortal coil with no prior arrangements in place through a will and this all comes at a time when our loved ones really don't have the emotional capabilities for it.

Cremation costs vary from state to state depending on each states laws of cremation by many factors such as religion or faith, cemetary, niche in a garden columbarium or if scattered ashes are allowed over bodies of water or land. In nearly every state their are areas of dispute over handling of cremation services. National or state parks do not allow the spreading of ashes over water ways or public land use. Many people and religions do not look kindly on the scattering of ashes and find it offensive.
