PC's maintain time using internal hardware clock chips. In order to reduce costs, these components are relatively low-cost devices, notoriously prone to drift. Microsoft Windows has a technology called active directory or AD for short. It was developed in 1996. It was previewed in 1999. Then it was released in Windows 2000 server edition. It was revised and extended for the Windows Server 2003. It was further refined for Windows server 2008 and renamed to Active Directory Domain Service.
