Have you ever printed UL approved labels with your standard barcode printer and noticed that the ink was rubbing off? Did your Information Technology Staff think something was wrong with your printer because of this? The printer was actually doing its job just fine. The retail industry saw a revolution in automated data collection and management when the barcode was invented in 1952 by Bernard Silver and Joseph Woodland. Barcode inventory is basically a system that uses a series of parallel lines with varying widths and thicknesses, which each represent the binary numbers 0 and 1. A barcode scanner is used to read the sequence, which starts from 0 to 9, and the sequence is then translated into information including price and product description using a computer.
