What's wonderful about Copyright vs. other forms of intellectual property, like Trademarks or Patents, is that it is automatically granted once your song is put in a fixed form. A "fixed form" means something tangible like on paper, a flash drive, on a CD, etc. Assuming your work is original (not copied) and it's the subject matter of copyright (literary work, artistic work, visual arts, dramatic works, sound recordings, and Serials and Periodicals), you do not need to apply for anything to own the copyright.

Brad Paisley is preparing to release his seventh album (in just 10 years!) and the country singer is taking on serious themes in American Saturday Night, recently telling The Associated Press, "I think this country has turned on a dime in a way that none of us foresaw coming a year ago. I think all of that and the birth of a son and the bold new times we're living it … it's hard to ignore." Paisley, whose sons are two years and two months old, co-wrote all 12 new tracks on the album, which was inspired both by the historic election of Democratic President Barack Obama and the global economic downturn.
