Unlike many professions, to become an audit professional, you do not need to study a defined educational route. A degree is a great thing for any young person to attain, but if you want a career in auditing, think carefully about which subject you study, and how it will help you find a job.
Numeracy
For an auditing career, you need to choose a degree subject which involves some kind of numeracy, especially if you're without a maths A-level. This doesn't mean a degree in maths, but any course with a numerical basis, like business studies, accounting or economics. If none of these subjects interest you, then consider getting a summer job, which will help you prove confidence with numbers on your CV.
Work Experience
Most degree courses now feature compulsory work experience as part of the course. It can be useful to have some sort of experience about your chosen industry, and it can help you decide what you want to do when you finish. If you can show a potential employer that you are a graduate who spent some of his or her study time working in the relevant industry, your chances of getting a job are far greater.
Commercially Focused
Academic studies are useful, but real-world skills which refer to the reality of commerce will be far more helpful when embarking upon a career. Knowledge of the real world will help you in whatever job you fill upon graduation; it's indispensible knowledge.
Good Location
Going to university in a good location can make a lot of difference to your career prospects. The bigger the city you study in, the more opportunities you will find both for work experience, case studies and real job opportunities upon graduation. London has the highest number of companies looking for candidates to fill auditing positions, but other major cities also have a high demand.
Something Enjoyable
Don't be too concerned about how your choice of degrees will appear to future potential employers. Choose a course you are going to enjoy, as it's better to fully complete a course of your choice, than struggling to keep up with a degree in a subject which doesn't interest you.
Degrees are three years of your life, and you should aim to make the most of it. If you are interested in a career in auditing, then do consider the tips above. But if numeracy and accounting don't interest you at all, it is probably best to study a subject which you enjoy and have excelled in. Three years of an accounting course, if all you want to do is photography, will make you resent education and your decision to study.
