Team building is an important aspect to any business, without it some teams work less well together. At a time when finances are a big issue it is very important that teams within companies work well together. One of the biggest issues of teams is team communication and this article will look at team building and communication, both of which are crucial to build a successful team within the work place. First of all, a team that does not communicate is not a team at all; it is just a group of individuals working toward their own goals. There are two sides to communication, both the speaker and the listener. It is the job of the speaker to convey their message in a clear and concise manner so that the listener can understand completely. This requires the speaker to understand the background of their audience and use appropriate language to present their message. If messages are communicated via email, or in a written format the chance to misconstrue them is larger. It is always advisable to have someone else proofread them before they are sent to check that nothing is left ambiguous.

A listener's role is to play close attention to all the details of what the speaker is saying. In order to achieve this the listener needs to give the speaker their full attention at all times and not be doing anything else other than listening. If it is necessary the listener should take notes of what is being said so they can refer back to them at a later date if needed. If the listener finds themselves not understanding a point brought up by the speaker then they should ask for clarification.

There needs to be real balance in communication in the workplace, this can be achieved through team building tasks and activities. Too much communication is often unnecessary; you do not have to report on every single detail and should often work with some initiative. Yet too little communication is counter-productive too, as presumptions should not be made on important projects. If team members have an uncertainty or problem within their task then they should most definitely communicate these feelings otherwise tension can build up and problems will not be solved.
