Every Cincinnati courier service is going to assess your billing statements based on something called a freight class. If you receive a hard copy invoice from your shipping company there is a good chance that somewhere on the bill there will be an indication of what the freight class assessed on your shipment was. This is a base figure calculated on a formula which is used in conjunction with a few other factors to determine the total rate it is going to cost you to ship your goods.
Companies may asses your freight class slightly differently based on their own shipping structure, but whatever class is finally assessed to your package, that number will be used in conjunction with how far you are shipping your goods to come up with the final amount you owe. That of course, is after any fees or surcharges are added on for extra equipment, special services, or special requirements are added on to your bill.
Weight and size together will determine the basic freight class of your shipment. These two factors along with distance from the majority of the cost for the shipping company which is why they are used to figure out how much they are going to charge you. They obviously have to assess a proper fee to cover all of their costs while still maintaining their predetermined profit margin.
Size and weight are both important for this type of figure because they both affect the amount of other cargo that can be placed into a cargo van, car, or semi, (depending on the size of your shipment) in addition to your load. So essentially, the size and weight figure is helping to determine the percentage of the load which will be assigned to your cargo, as well as how much you will affect the mileage of the shipping vehicle.
Freight classes also have an adjustment that can be made based on any extenuating circumstances surrounding the shipment. This typically refers to anything that might make the procedure of shipping your goods more difficult than a standard shipment.
Good examples of things like this are any shipments which are exceptionally hard to fit in a vehicle because of their size or sharpen, or anything that might be exceptionally heavy for its size requiring special equipment to load and unload the shipment. Anything which requires extra effort or equipment from the courier is likely going to raise the level of your freight class.
