It is crucial to consider the risk assessment in storage business. Though every business— large or small— may be different, it is still very important to consider a risk assessment approach and steps to take in order to control any possible risks.
Below is an example of a business scene with possible risk assessment needed for the company:
MegaWarehouse Ltd. offers cold storage and distribution facilities averaging at -18 to 30 degrees Celsius at three different locations. Their service extends to three different locations offering services to different companies of different sizes.
There are about 25 people employed in the warehouses, working in shifts. The staff came mostly from Europe and only one of them speaks perfect English. During peak season, the company hires more people from employment agency.
The site manager then takes the risk assessment of the place. The risk assessment covers goods inward from the gate to the cold storage facility.
The risk assessment is done by:
1. Identifying the hazards:
- The site manager should try to look at HSE website for data on safety and guidance of warehousing industry, particularly the page on temperature and controlled storage.
- The site manager should walk around the area where people working may go and noting things that may be a risk to business or anything that is not in accordance to HSE guidelines.
- The site manager should talk to the safety staff and discuss issues on the risk and risk controls and try to relay these issues to other non-English speaking people.
- The site manager should talk to the company's first-aiders and discuss about surveillance health questionnaires and any possible issues that needs attention.
- The site manager should consult to people concerned about the health and safety of any particular job at the site and if ask there are any possible solutions for this issue.
- The site manager should look at the accident book to know more about the company's past problem.
2. The site manager then will write down who are the people that can be harmed and how.
3. For every hazard noted, the manager will write down what controls to use, if there are any, to manage the hazards. Then these controls will be compared to the good practice guidance on the HSE website. If there are any missing controls needed or the site manager thinks that the controls were not good enough, he will then suggest possible controls to be administered.
4. The site manager will discuss these findings with the safety representative and to implement these findings, the site manager will decide who will be responsible for each actions noted a and when will these actions be done. The English speaking staff will then relay these notes to the other staff to coordinate the information well.
5. The site manager will need to review and update the assessment at least once every year or anytime when major changes to the workplace occur.
