As an investment, insulation in different areas on your home may be costly; it may take a long time to regain the invested amount. If you have enough funds to insulate your home, it is highly recommended to invest in it as soon as possible. In terms of saving on energy bills, installing insulation in your home is proven to be one of the cost-efficient ways to do so.

Insulating your hot water tank is probably the simplest and easiest way of saving energy and therefore money. If you fit insulation up to the accepted standard you will cut heat loss from your hot water tank by as much as 80%. If you already have a jacket fitted you should check that it’s at least 75mm thick and if it isn’t it might be an idea to get rid of your old jacket and fit a new one.

The idea behind tank and pipe insulation is very simple, you keep your water hotter for longer by reducing the amount of heat that escapes through the walls of the tank. If less heat escapes you will lead to expend less energy reheating the tank.

The money that could be saved is not absolutely astronomical compared to some other forms of investment. A new 75mm thick jacket will save you around £40 a year. The jackets themselves actually cost less than half that so you will pay your money back very quickly, whilst insulation for water pipes costs between £5 and £10 and saves you that much in a year.

Fitting hot water insulation is something that you can do relatively easily yourself. You simply buy a jacket and make sure that it is fitted tightly, whilst it can be a little tricky it shouldn’t be too challenging. When it comes to fitting pipe insulation, it is again easy to do yourself providing the pipes are easily accessible, if they’re not it might be worth getting a professional in to do the work, but this would incur extra cost that may take you several more years to recoup.

One of the things that you can obviously do to reduce the cost of your fuel bills is to make sure that you are getting the most for your money. Some of the major fuel providers, like British Gas, have recently announced price cuts, so if you are coming to the end of your contract make sure that when it comes to getting a new one you are getting the best deal possible.
