Mobile phone technology has developed at an astounding pace during recent years. 10 years ago, the idea of a colour screen let alone a camera, mp3 player and Internet all in one hand-held device was just a dream. But now, if you don’t have all of these things you feel embarrassed to get your phone out in public.

According to Ofcom, the number of mobile connections rose from just over 10 million in 1998 to nearly 75 million in 2008 and 86% of adults now own a mobile phone. The real change however, is in how we use our mobile phones. They are no longer just for calling and texting. You can work, plan you’re your night out and buy groceries all from the palm of your hand. Thanks to things like the Blackberry and i-phone using Google, Facebook and email on your phone has been made into a reality. Sony Ericsson mastered the mp3-phone mix, and Samsung has brought out some high-quality camera phones that are comparable to many digital cameras in the market.

Phone companies such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Blackberry and Apple have all been trying to produce the best ‘do-it-all’ handset that will offer a user everything they could possible want from a phone: mobile internet, music, email, camera, GPS, organiser, as well as simply telephone calling and text messaging. Plus it still has to be cool and stylish. This year Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung and HTC have all come up with some top notch versions of the ‘smartphone’ and the big providers such as Vodafone, O2, Orange and T Mobile are all itching to get exclusive deals with what they feel is the best and coolest option on the market.

The Blackberry Storm has a touch-screen, 3G email connection, space for 4,000 songs, built in GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera as well as the usual polyphonic ring tones, voice activated dialing and an alarm clock.

The Nokia 5800 also has a touch screen, 3G internet, 3.2 megapixel camera, music application, PC syncronisation and again the usual, ‘as-standard features’ so that you can actually just use your phone to speak to someone.

The Samsung Tocco again has the same internet connection, GPS etc as the two previous options, but this one also has an eight megapixel camera – more powerful than some digital SLRs currently in the shops. Again it has a touch screen, a wide selection of games and it even has a flashlight because you never know when it might come in handy.

Finally, the HTC Magic, exclusively on Vodafone, has 3G internet access with Google, touch screen, mp3 player, GPS and a 3.2 megapixel camera. However, although it has all these high-tech features it doesn’t have games, voice activated dialing, speed dialing or a stop watch and unlike the Samsung, it doesn’t have a torch.

So, these phones are all pretty much the same. All you have to do is decide which one is the coolest. Just one warning: Don’t lose your all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone, otherwise you may feel like your life is over.
